PRE SHOT ROUTINE

For some people, a pre-shot routine in golf is something that is always done the same, before, during and after every shot. If you want to play golf to your full potential, you must incorporate a pre-shot routine in your game. This can be something created by you or simply adopt a pre-shot routine used by many great players.
In this lesson, I will share a few proven pre-shot routines and how you can adopt a preferred pre-shot routine to your game.
Here are a few benefits in having a pre-shot routine:
- Will automatically start to relax your body;
- Will boost your confidence;
- Will reduce your anxiety level, which is great if you are anxious during competitions;
- Will help you focus on your target;
- Will encourage consistency in your game;
- Will help you make the transition to a good frame of mind; and
- Will prepare you physically and mentally.
Adopting a pre-shot routine:

Let me show you what I have learned over the years, which pre-shot routine I feel comfortable with, and one that can be adopted in your game.
Having a pre-shot routine will help you with the following:
1. Improve your concentration (focus);
2. Reduce tension and become more relaxed before and during the shot; and
3. Improve your consistency with your shots.
If you adopt a routine and practice it regularly, it will soon become second nature to you. Develop your own routine so you can go through the same procedures with all your shots without creating any undo delay in your preparation, as shown in the images above.
The full shot routine:
Step 1: Visualize your shot
Visualization and a positive mental attitude are key elements to making a good shot, as shown in the images above.
Step 2: Position your club
Position your clubhead behind the ball aiming at your target, as shown in the image above.
Step 3: Position your feet
Position your feet to the ball and assume your address position, as shown in the image above.
Step 4: Position your hands on the club
Place your hands on the club. Take a practice swing if you wish, as shown in the image above.
VISUALIZE the results you want than make your swing, as shown in the image below.
Step 5: Finish with positive thoughts
Hold the finish position for a few seconds. By holding this position, your body will become accustomed to what a good finish position feels like (muscle memory), as shown in the image above.
This is only one example of a pre shot routine. You can develop one that best suits your particular style and sense of rhythm.
