Forward swing – hitting the ball farther
Do you want to hit the ball farther?
In order to hit the ball farther, you must increase your clubhead speed. Let me show you how.
Hitting Farther (Lag)
LAG:
An important component of a good swing is increasing your clubhead speed. By understanding how to practice this concept, you will be able to generate more clubhead speed in the impact zone, therefore, giving you more distance with all clubs.
WHAT IS LAG?
Lag is maintaining the 90-degree angle created with your arm and club during the downswing, as shown in the images above.
At about 9 o’clock, your club shaft and left arm should create a 90-degree angle. This angle should be maintained during the first part of your downswing. Your hands will start to release near your right thigh. As your hands’ release, they will naturally rotate through the hitting zone resulting in maximum clubhead speed.
COMMON MISTAKE
CASTING:
Casting is a sign of a premature release of the 90-degree angle which is a common mistake. It will reduce the ability to develop clubhead speed, therefore, causing loss of distance. It indicates the right side overpowering the left side at the impact zone causing a lack of clubhead speed, as shown in the images above and at the bottom.
Increase your speed, increase your distance
What is needed to hit the ball farther?
The first thing you must understand is how to create additional speed at the proper area in your swing, which will create additional distance to your shots.
Learning and practicing the following techniques will enable you to add significant distance to your shots without swinging any harder.
When the start of your downswing is done properly using the 90-degree drill, you will notice additional distance to all your shots.
Let’s understand that in order for you to accomplish successfully the 90-degree drill you must first have mastered the weight transfer drill.
Players that are transferring their weight properly during the swing are more likely to be able to achieve better results with the 90-degree drill.
The opposite is also true. If you cannot transfer your weight properly during the swing, you will have difficulty in understanding and executing the 90-degree drill.
Steps to follow in order to increase your distance:
1. Weight transfer drill (learn it and master it)
2. 90-degree drill (learn it after you have mastered the weight transfer drill)
