1. Shoulders parallel to the slope:
Tilt your shoulders parallel to the slope. By matching your shoulders to the slope, the situation will play more like a flat lie. I adjust my spine angle to the slope which means tilting my shoulders to match the slant of the lie, as shown in the image above.
2. Aim left of target:
Aim slightly to the left of the target. The ball will tend to move to the right, as shown in the image above.
3. Take less club:
The slope of the hill will decrease the loft to the shot. To compensate for the lower trajectory, take one or sometimes two higher-numbered club you would normally use. (Example: take an #9 iron instead of a #8 iron).
4. Ball position:
When I set up on downhill lies, I play the ball slightly farther back toward the middle of my stance, as shown in the image above.

1. Your weight forward
You have to lean a little into the hill to keep your balance. If you stood at your normal posture to the upslope of the hill, you’d fall backward.
Position your weight near your toes as you setup, as shown in the image above.
2. Choke down on your club:
Depending on the slop, you should hold the club lower on the grip. This will help you swing better and also help you not to hit the ground as you swing your club.
3. Aim to the right of your target
The ball will always be drawn towards the bottom of the hill. When the ball is above your feet, aim right of your target as it will produce a natural draw. (Draw = right to left shot as shown by the yellow arrow in the image above.)
4. Distance:
When the ball lands, you can expect more rolls than a normal flat lie shot. Choose your club accordingly.
5. Balance:
As you swing your club, you will be tempted to lose balance at the end of your swing. You should keep your weight towards your toes during the entire swing. Practice this shot, it is a great shot to have in your bag!
