Sand Play.

The stroke:

The feeling of making this swing is like producing a descending blow during the downswing. Getting the ball out of the bunker by hitting the sand first, needs a more powerful motion than just hitting the ball out of the grass. The club needs to hit the sand about 1 1/2 inches behind the ball. The ball will then be lifted out of the bunker by the sand, as shown in the images above.

I always tell my students to finish the swing with the club pointing at a vertical position.

The flange:

The flange.

The sole of the club (sand wedge)(in yellow) is called a flange. The flange is additional steel added to the club placed lower than the leading edge of the clubface. It will help the player not to enter the sand too deeply when used correctly.

Long bunker shots:

Long bunker shot.

Bunker shots from 50 yards away and longer should be played as if you were on the grass where the ball is contacted first. In other words, you do not hit the sand first when playing long bunker shots.

The hazard rule still applies. Acceleration during the forward swing and a completed follow-through is essential to produce good shots in the bunker, as shown in the image above.

Why practice in the bunkers?

Practicing in the bunker.

Regular practices in the bunkers will develop confidence in executing these shots. You will become more consistent in getting the ball up and down around the greens, as shown in the image above.

Here are a few drills:

1. Circle drill:

Circle drill.

Place a circle around the ball, as shown in the image above. This will indicate where to hit the sand behind the ball. The sand will propel the ball out of the bunker.

The ball will come out on a cushion of sand which is why you need to swing about twice as hard as for a normal shot in the grass.

Contacting the sand in the right spot will eliminate the circle in the sand which usually indicates proper execution of the shot, as shown in the image above.

2. Finish your swing with your club pointing vertically:

The worse thing you can do in the bunker is to hit the sand and leave your clubhead in the sand. In order to avoid this make sure you do the following:

  1. Position yourself accordingly (take your stance);.
  2. Make a good backswing that will enable you to produce clubhead speed needed to get the ball out of the bunker and to your target; and
  3. Finish your swing with the club pointing towards the sky (vertical position), as shown in the images above.
