Let me show you how you can simply follow a few techniques and become a great bunker player.

A few rules must be understood when playing in a hazard area. The bunker is a hazard.

Spend a few hours practicing in the bunker at the beginning of the season and you will be surprised how easier this shot will become, as shown in the image on your right. Use the following techniques provided in this lesson to improve this part of your game.

You should practice often in order for you to see a very big change in your ability to play better in the bunkers.

The rule of the bunker:

The bunker

A sand trap or “bunker” is classified as a hazard, as shown in the image above. A ball in a hazard is subject to the rule governing a ball in play. The rule states that a player may not ground his club (touch the sand) while setting up for the bunker shot or during the backswing. He may only take his stance. The sand may only be touched during the forward swing. Failure to observe this rule penalizes the player two strokes (see Rule 13).

Let’s help your bunker shots and lower your scores around the green.

Taking your stance, addressing the ball.

Sand play or bunker shot: Before we look into the bunker shot, let’s look at the following two definitions:

1. Addressing the ball: Positioning your feet and grounding the club (club touching the sand or ground), as shown in the image above with the red X

2. Taking your stance: Positioning your feet without grounding the club, as shown in the image above.

If you are addressing the ball, as shown in the image above with the red X, you will be penalized 2 strokes according to Rule 13
