1. Weight transfer drill (learn it and master it)
Please refer to the golf lesson 02 for this drill. If the player does not transfer his/her weight properly during the swing, it will be difficult to be consistent with his/her shots.
I would consider this drill as being the first one to practice as it will also help you to finish your swing in balance, as shown in the image above. It will also help you to achieve the 90-degree drill successfully.
2. 90-degree drill (learn it after you have mastered the weight transfer drill)
The backswing:
You can hold the club near the middle of the shaft with the right hand in order to reinforce the feeling of the 90-degree angle. Bring the club back until your left arm reaches approximately the 9 o’clock position. A 90-degree angle should be created between your left arm and the shaft, as shown in the image above.
The downswing:
Keep the right hand in this position as you pull down with your left arm maintaining the 90-degree angle until your left-hand approaches the right thigh, as shown in the image above. Gradually slide your right hand closer to the left hand as you repeat this drill until your hands are in the normal grip position. Practice this drill often and you should see an increase in your clubhead speed and distance with your shots.
The 90-degree drill:
Try this drill and feel the improvement of your motion. By allowing the right hand to separate during the downswing you can feel how the 90-degree angle is maintained. Let the hands come together again as the clubhead approaches the impact zone. Practice often for your body to remember the correct motion (muscle memory). By maintaining the radius of the left arm, it will help prevent the premature release of the right hand, as shown in the image above.
Muscle memory drill
In order to see a significant difference with the distance, you must practice the 90-degree drill many times a day. Make it a daily activity for the following few weeks.
It is the hardest drill to master for most of my students. Most of them do succeed by practicing this daily activity and making it a priority.
Using this method by placing a ribbon around your arm and club, as shown in the image above, and holding this position for a few seconds will help with muscle memory.
By using the muscle memory drill explained in golf lesson 04, this will become second nature. This will also help you accelerate the learning process.
