PUTTING – STROKE, DISTANCE, AND DIRECTION
Now that we have seen a few lessons on the full swing and on the short game, let’s see the other half of the game which is putting.
You will actually hit the ball in the air 50% of the time in order for the ball to get to the putting green. You will then roll the ball on the ground 50% of the time which is called putting.
Putting is 1/2 of the game.
Why do most players struggle with putting? In my opinion, most players do not practice putting often enough. They lack the knowledge on ways they can practice putting.
In order for you to practice this part of the game, ideas and drills will be provided to you in this golf lesson.
The putting stroke (swing):
1. How should you swing your putter?
The lower hand controls the path of the club and the upper hand simply helps to stabilize the swing making the action similar to a pendulum. Notice that the hands will travel from one leg to the other leg, as shown in the image on your right.
2. What are your arms, wrists, and hands doing as your putting?
The hands, wrists, and arms are very still during this motion. No breaking (turning or bending), as shown in the image above and below.
Use your larger muscles to stroke the ball:
Make your stroke by using your shoulders, arms, and wrists as a one-unit system. The wrists should not produce a second motion. In other words, do not break (bend) the wrists during the putting stroke, as shown in the images above.
DISTANCE OR DIRECTION?
When putting, do you prefer always having the correct distance or direction?
If a magician would appear and give you the ability to always have the correct distance or the correct direction when executing your putting stroke, which would you take? Distance or Direction?
Which is more important, distance or direction? Both are important but one is more important than the other. If you could be perfect with one, which one would you choose?
Let me show you the reason why you should always choose the DISTANCE as your answer.
Direction:
In the image above, the direction was perfect but the ball finished 4 feet past the hole leaving a 4 foot downhill putt for the next shot. This would definitely be more difficult than a 2-inch putt.
Once you have determined the direction you want with your set up, your only thought should be how hard to hit the ball when putting (distance).
Distance:
In the image above, the distance was perfect with the ball finishing two inches past the hole. The next stroke would be a short tap in the hole.
THE DISTANCE IS MUCH MORE
IMPORTANT THAN THE DIRECTION.
